Description

Mechanism of Action:

Citicoline is a precursor of phosphatidylcholine, a major component of brain cell membranes. It increases choline and cytidine levels in the brain, enhancing the synthesis of:

  • Acetylcholine (a key neurotransmitter)
  • Phospholipids (for neuronal membrane repair and function)

It also improves cerebral blood flow and mitochondrial function, and has neuroprotective effects after brain injury or stroke.

Indications / Uses:

  • Stroke recovery (ischemic stroke, post-stroke rehabilitation)
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • Cognitive disorders (vascular dementia, memory loss, Alzheimer's disease)
  • Parkinson’s disease (as an adjunct)
  • Glaucoma and amblyopia (neuroprotective in optic nerve diseases)
  • ADHD (off-label)

Dosage (Adult):

  • Oral: 500–2000 mg per day in divided doses
  • IV/IM: 250–1000 mg once or twice daily (typically in hospital setting)
  • Dosage may vary depending on condition and severity

Drug Interactions:

  • Generally minimal; Citicoline is considered safe to use alongside other CNS drugs
  • May enhance effects of levodopa in Parkinson’s disease
