Description
Mechanism of Action:
Citicoline is a precursor of phosphatidylcholine, a major component of brain cell membranes. It increases choline and cytidine levels in the brain, enhancing the synthesis of:
- Acetylcholine (a key neurotransmitter)
- Phospholipids (for neuronal membrane repair and function)
It also improves cerebral blood flow and mitochondrial function, and has neuroprotective effects after brain injury or stroke.
Indications / Uses:
- Stroke recovery (ischemic stroke, post-stroke rehabilitation)
- Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
- Cognitive disorders (vascular dementia, memory loss, Alzheimer's disease)
- Parkinson’s disease (as an adjunct)
- Glaucoma and amblyopia (neuroprotective in optic nerve diseases)
- ADHD (off-label)
Dosage (Adult):
- Oral: 500–2000 mg per day in divided doses
- IV/IM: 250–1000 mg once or twice daily (typically in hospital setting)
- Dosage may vary depending on condition and severity
Drug Interactions:
- Generally minimal; Citicoline is considered safe to use alongside other CNS drugs
- May enhance effects of levodopa in Parkinson’s disease
Pregnancy & Lactation:
- Category not clearly defined. Use only if clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor.
- Safety in lactation not well established.
