Mechanism of Action:
- Chlordiazepoxide: A benzodiazepine with anxiolytic and sedative effects. Reduces stress-related GI symptoms by calming the central nervous system.
- Clidinium Bromide: An anticholinergic that reduces GI motility and secretions, helping to relieve cramps, spasms, and abdominal pain.
Usual Adult Dosage:
One capsule/tablet, taken 2 to 4 times daily before meals and at bedtime.
(Doses may vary depending on brand and patient tolerance.)
Indications:
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
- Peptic ulcer disease (as adjunct)
- Functional gastrointestinal disorders (e.g., abdominal cramps, bloating)
- Acute enterocolitis
Common Side Effects:
- Dry mouth
- Drowsiness or sedation
- Urinary retention (especially in elderly patients)
Use With Caution In:
- Elderly patients (risk of sedation and confusion)
- Glaucoma
- Prostatic hypertrophy
- Severe hepatic or renal impairment
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women (Category D for chlordiazepoxide)
