Description

Mechanism of Action:

  • Chlordiazepoxide: A benzodiazepine with anxiolytic and sedative effects. Reduces stress-related GI symptoms by calming the central nervous system.
  • Clidinium Bromide: An anticholinergic that reduces GI motility and secretions, helping to relieve cramps, spasms, and abdominal pain.

 Usual Adult Dosage:

One capsule/tablet, taken 2 to 4 times daily before meals and at bedtime.
(Doses may vary depending on brand and patient tolerance.)

Indications:

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Peptic ulcer disease (as adjunct)
  • Functional gastrointestinal disorders (e.g., abdominal cramps, bloating)
  • Acute enterocolitis

Common Side Effects:

  • Dry mouth
  • Drowsiness or sedation
  • Urinary retention (especially in elderly patients)

Use With Caution In:

  • Elderly patients (risk of sedation and confusion)
  • Glaucoma
  • Prostatic hypertrophy
  • Severe hepatic or renal impairment
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women (Category D for chlordiazepoxide)
